The Meningitis Trust

The Meningitis Trust works to ensure all communities are aware of the signs, symptoms and impact of meningitis and to ensure anyone affected accesses quality care and support - our support services are unique within Scotland. We provide: a 24 hour freephone helpline 0800 028 18 28, our community services nurse, professional counselling, art therapy, financial grants, one to one contacts and our family fun days. These services are a lifeline for the individual affected and their family and friends.

There are around 40,000 people living in Scotland today who have been affected by meningitis; in addition there could be a further 736 new cases reported each year – although experts believe these numbers only account for half the actual cases, as cases of viral meningitis often go unreported. Of those who contract the disease 10% will die, 15% will suffer permanent after-effects such as loss of hearing, sight impairment, memory loss, personality changes or limb loss where blood poisoning has occurred. For many individuals and families the emotional trauma suffered as a result of the sudden impact can leave a profound and lasting effect on family life.
