Edinburgh Centre for Neuro Oncology

The Edinburgh Centre for Neuro-Oncology is one of only four neuro-oncology centres in Scotland which provide extremely specialised care to patients diagnosed with brain and other central nervous system tumours.  It forms part of the Department of Clinical Neurosciences in the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh.  ECNO was opened in 1998, and since then it has evolved into one of the leading neuro-oncology centres in the UK.  ECNO provides a first-class neuro-oncology service to patients, their families and carers predominantly in South East Scotland (Lothian, Borders, Dumfries & Galloway and Fife).

The purpose of the unit is to provide a unique, fast and effective referral, diagnostic and treatment service to doctors and their patients.  ECNO is also an easy point of contact for patients, their families and carers for information, advice and support.  The ECNO team are a very supportive and close knit group, and try to provide as much support to patients as possible in a variety of ways.

The staff and scientists of ECNO also actively promote research in many different fields into the treatment and understanding of brain tumours.  The research that is carried out will lead to faster and more efficient treatment of brain tumours and a better quality of life for patients.  ECNO wish to support future innovative research into areas such as stem cell therapy, gene therapy and drug delivery methods, and it will aim to improve access for patients into clinical trials.   ECNO are also trying to raise funds to enable the unit to invest in some state-of-the art diagnostic equipment such as the SonoWand®, which is used to better ensure safer brain surgery. The ECNO team ultimately want to ensure that we can provide the best care possible for our patients, their families and their carers.
